GARDEN/HOMESTEAD COVER CROPS THROUGH THE GROWING SEASON

Cover cropping is not difficult and is an important tool for increasing soil fertility and growing nutritious food. We’ll explore the reasons for and the practical implementation of growing cover crops on a small scale in the vegetable garden, pasture and orchard. We’ll practice hands on planning, planting, and management of cover crops throughout the growing season.

Saturday April 18  from 10am-1pm

Saturday May 23  from 10am-1pm

Saturday August 29  from 10am-1pm.

Each session builds upon the previous one thus taking the full series is recommended.

• Held at Wild Browse Farm and Sustainability Center 87 Bullard Pasture Rd. Wendell, MA. 01379.

• All workshops will be both lecture/discussion and hands-on.

• Class size 10 people maximum

• Fee schedule: $25.00/class; series $70.00. Space permitting, no one will be turned away for lack of cash. Barter will be considered.

HOMESTEAD POULTRY

Raising poultry for eggs or meat can be an important source of nutritious food and fertility on the homestead. We will cover the practical steps to insure the successful addition of poultry (chickens, turkeys, Guineas) to your backyard or homestead. Learn about breeds, equipment needed, feeding, management, housing, and pasture.

Monday February 23, 2015– 7-8:30 pm;  Wendell Free Library, Wendell, MA.

We will cover the basics to help you determine if raising poultry is for you and what are the next steps. We will facilitate a bulk order of poultry for spring delivery. Free.  Sponsored by the Wendell Agricultural Commission.

Saturday April 11, 2015– 10am -1pm;  At Wild Browse Farm & Sustainability Center. We will have a hands on demonstration of our equipment and poultry infrastructure. We will discuss your set up and its readiness for the arrival of chicks/poults. Please bring sketches, plans or photos of your infrastructure. Co-sponsored by the Wendell Agricultural Commission. Requested donations $20-30; no one will be turned away for lack of cash. Barter will be considered.

April 23 or 24 – Poultry arrival at WBF&S; pick up your order and prepare them to take home!
